Audience
there are 3 types of audience. Mass audiences ,simple audiences and diffused audiences are the three types of audiences. Apart from studying them in detail we also studied the various theorists
Adorno and Horkheimer
Stuart Hall
Blamer and Kutz
David Morely
Alferd Bandura
Mass audiences are ones that do not dress for the occasion and are very casual aswell as easily distracted. They know that they will keep reciving the media. Simple audience refers to live performances such as theatre where people dress up for the ocassion and deeply concentrate on the media that they are consuming. Diffused audiences exist in the media we consume every day for example social media where everyone has a role to play.
The theorists that we study have different theories on audiences. Firstly Adorno and Horkheimer came up with the hypodemic needle theory which says that audiences are helpless towards media which is being injected into them like syringe, they are being made duller by the media they consume.Stuart Hall’s reception theory states that audiences use dominant, negotiated and oppositional reading when consuming media.Dominant reading is when the audience completely believes the media that is shown to them. Negotiated reading is when they partially belive in the media they are shown and oppositional reading is when they completely disagree with the media they are shown.
Alferd Bandura is known for the Bobo doll experiment.
Conducted by Albert Bandura
Tested 36 Girls and 36 Boys from the age of 3-6.
Children watched a Video where a to clown called the Bobo Doll was beaten by an adult violently.
Children were then taken to a room full of attractive toys but they were not allowed to touch them.
Children were then taken to a room full of Bobo Dolls and were allowed to touch them
88% of the children started beating the dolls
8-9 months later 44% of the children produced the same violent reaction
This study became controversial as it said that children copy violent behaviour they see through Media.
